  • Universal Youth Service - Summer Youth Activities Programme

    The Universal Youth Service is running the Summer Activities Programme for children and young people in school year 1-12 from Monday 24th July to Friday 25th August 2023. These will be delivered across the borough at South Ruislip, Ruislip, and Harlington Young People's Centre's.     Dear parents / guardians,

    Health issues related to the current warm weather are causing our A&Es to be busier than usual, with waits of up to 11 hours in A&Es at the moment. A&E is for life threatening emergencies.  There are lots of NHS services that can help you. Knowing where to go, and when, will help you get the right care when you need it.

    Your local high street pharmacy can provide advice and over the counter medication to help with hayfever.  You can also contact your GP surgery or call 111 when your GP is closed.

    In this warm weather, when we also have a very high pollen count at the moment, make sure you follow our top tips to prevent yourself becoming unwell.

  • The Rough Tough Pirates of Year 1

    Brookside Primary was invaded by the little, rough and tough pirates from Year 1 on Wednesday 24th May. Parents, guardians, carers and members of the Brookside family were privileged to watch our brave pirates perform their engaging ‘Pirate Assembly’. The fun did not end there for our brave little pirates. It carried on when they created and designed their own pirate ships and went on an exciting treasure hunt to find the buried treasures.

  • Romans Workshop

    Pupils of Year 3 classes, Ottawa and Brasilia, had a fantastic workshop on The Romans presented by Tiberius, a Roman expert, on Tuesday, which was enjoyable for both the pupils and staff. Tiberius provided an experience for children to be totally immersed in the Roman culture and their way of living. Using maps, clothes, props, and artefacts such as coins and weapons from Roman times, the children were fascinated and excited to learn about the many different aspects of Roman life. They were particularly interested in the weaponry used in battle and the reasons why the Romans were so successful at conquering other countries. Tiberius sat children in groups and presented them with many artefacts from Roman times, and then asked them to predict what they believed each item was used for. He had both classes acting out a Roman battle and dual. Pupils also learnt about the rebel Queen Boadicea who led an army against the Romans. In the end, they were encouraged to ask questions and they were enthusiastic and participated extremely well.

  • Viking Workshop Year 5

    Our Year 5 children were treated to a whole-day Viking workshop. They engaged in activities relating to Viking culture and religion. The children observed and felt actual Viking accessories such as helmets, coats of fur/pelts, and more.

  • ‘Brush for Better Health’ - National Smile Month

    Now more than ever we need to focus on keeping our teeth as healthy as possible.  A recent report published by Public Health England highlighted that Hillingdon has 28.2% of 5-year-old children as  having decayed, missing and filled teeth, much higher than the England average!

    In Hillingdon to increase awareness The Oral Health Foundation are offering all schools the opportunity to join our special Oral Health awareness sessions via Teams.  They are also holding special oral health story times at local libraries with information for parents & carers too, please see the timetable below:

  • A Royal Celebration

    At Brookside Primary, we celebrated the King’s Coronation on Friday 5th May. The children had a fun filled day and took part in many activities throughout the day. For the day, pupils and teachers had the op- portunity to dress up as ‘Royals’. Some dressed as Kings and Queens, others as Princesses and Princes. We also had children dressed as the Royal Guards! The school gathered in the playground in the morning to take pictures and to sing and dance. Furthermore, pupils took part in a ‘Royalty’ themed poetry competition and received certificates for the best poem in each class. After lunch, the children had class parties where they enjoyed cakes and drinks and had fun playing lots of games!

  • Learn with the Lords

    Key Stage 2 pupils had a fantastic opportunity to meet, through a video link, a member of the House of Lords – Lord Mann. They discussed with Lord Mann, the role of the UK Parliament, the role and membership of the House of Lords and the difference between the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The pupils were able to enhance their understanding by asking relevant questions. They were extremely excited about this amazing opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

  • Public Health - Cases of Measles in Hillingdon

    The local Public Health team has informed us that there has been a recent increase in the number of cases of Measles in Hillingdon. The cases all children aged 1 to 16, and all are unvaccinated.

    The current MMR vaccination uptake in Hillingdon is less than 75%, which means that 1 in every 4 children in the borough has not had the two doses of MMR vaccination that provides safe, effective protection against measles. There is variation in uptake across areas of the borough, which means that is some areas a greater number of children have not been vaccinated. This increases the risk of measles transmission in schools.

    Measles is a highly infectious respiratory virus that transmits through respiratory droplets from an infected person when they cough and sneeze which is then inhaled by another person. If that person is not fully vaccinated the risk of getting measles is high.

    The signs and symptoms of measles to be aware of are:

    • Cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and a cough
    • Sore red eyes that may be sensitive to light
    • A high temperature (fever), which may reach around 40°C
    • Small greyish-white spots on the inside of the cheeks
    • A few days later, a red-brown blotchy rash will appear, usually starting on the head or upper neck, before spreading outwards to the rest of the body.

    It is important that if a child is suspected of having measles, they do not attend school. They must telephone their GP or NHS 111. Measles is a notifiable disease which means all cases must be followed up, and contacts identified and given advice on what action they need to take.

  • Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) Programme - Easter Offer

    Bookings for Hillingdon’s Easter Holiday, Activities and Food (HAF) programme have now opened! Through their programme of free healthy food and fun activities, children and young people can develop new skills, take part in creative and physical activities, learn about food and cooking, and enjoy a nutritious meal each day. 

    The holiday programme is open to school-aged children from reception to Year 11 (inclusive) who receive benefits-related free school meals. They are also able to provide a limited number of discretionary places to vulnerable children that do not meet the Free School Meal criteria, if you would like for a child you are supporting to be considered for a HAF place, please email HAFprogramme@hillingdon.gov.uk with the child's name, date of birth, address and parent contact details. 

    Activities this Easter include: 

    • Learn to ride a bike or develop your cycling skills
    • Football, Cricket, Basketball and multi-sports
    • Parent and child cookery sessions 
    • Dance, drama and arts programmes 
    • Multi-activity camps 
    • Remote Control car racing
    • Coding activities 
    • SEND activity camps
    • Specialist music and drama programmes for asylum/refugee children
